Go out for a walk and when you see a woman on the street who you are interested in, walk up to her and ask for directions, in Russian. It shouldn't take more than a day or two to make a friend who speaks a bit of English and you can trade language lessons with her. Remember, Nizhny Novgorod is a technology centre so there are more jobs than average where English language ability is an asset. Therefore there are more Russians than average who will be interested in hanging out with English speaking people.

But always, always, always, open up conversations by speaking in Russian, no matter how bad it is.
