Hello,

I'm looking into buying a Lada Niva (about a 1992 model) in either Ukraine or Russia and have some questions about foreigners (like me) doing this.

My plan is to buy a car in Russia or Ukraine, have the car registered in my name and use the car to drive around Europe, but keeping the russian or ukrainian number plates on the car. (l don't intend to re-register the car in another country).

1) In Russia such a car l think would cost about $1000-1500. Correct? In Ukraine will such a car be cheaper or more expensive?

2) I've been told that in Russia l cannot buy a car without a Russian Driver's License (they don't accept a foreign or international driver's license for buying a car) is this true???? In fact, it seems in Russia you must have a Russian driver's license to drive a car if you have a business visa, only tourist visa holders can use their national driver's license!). Is it the same in Ukraine, must l have a Ukr Driv Lic to buy a car there?

3) Some countries insist that you have a residency permit to buy a car (eg. Lithuania); does Ukraine or Russia have such a requirement?
