Greetings from Downunder,

My friend and I hope to ride motorcycles from England through Scandinavia, enter Russia from Finland, see St. Petersburg and then exit back into Eastern Europe on our way to Istanbul. The motocycles will have British registration.

Does anybody know if the system for entering Russia with motorcycles is any different to that for cars?

Thanks for this discussion board, very useful intormation.

As far as I am aware, there are no differences between taking a motorcycle or a car into Russia. You still need your V5 original(UK registration document), 3rd party insurance for Russia(purchasedin Finland at the border), international driving permit and presumably Australian License. I assume you are purchasing the bikes, rather than hiring/borrowing them. The information on the V5 must ideally match your passport, driving license, international driving permit. Your i.d.p.'s will need to be aquired in Australia before you depart (I think). We get ours from UK motoring organisations (AA/RAC) and they must check with UK's DVLA (driver licensing authority) that you're not 'banned'. So obviously they can't do this for your Australian Licenses. If taking a hired bike, then its a little more complicated - no different to a hired car, I assume. I'm not an expert in this area, so anything I'd say would be guessed and not really very useful.

try also www.horizonsunlimited.com the bulletin board north asia forum and also their 'library' of border crossing procedures. This site is dedicated to bike people and will be very useful to you. Car people are 'tolerated' there (I'm a car person).
