is there a particular train from moscow to st petersburg that guarantees power in the cabin? I have a sleep disorder and need to sleep with a CPAP machine. Any ideas?

It's probably not practical to power a CPAP machine on a Russian train.

However, you can easily travel between these two cities by a fast daytime train, or by air -- and air tickets (presently less than $70 one-way) are roughly the same price as the train tickets!

So it's only a question of comfort and convenience. In both cities, the airports are well outside of the city center, so you have extra trips to make getting to and from the airports. The rail stations are near metro stops, and near the city centers, so there isn't as much "schlepping" (or if you use taxis, the taxi rides are less costly).

Also, rail offers you the chance to see some Russian scenery from your window.

If you take the train, you can (for example) have an early lunch in Moscow, catch the train, and have dinner in Peterburg -- there are early morning trains as well. Air flights are available various times throughout the day.

Some of the lux class will have power in the cabins but you may have to pay the provodnits/a a small fee to have it turned on.

Last year on some trans Siberian trains I was on, people were running extension cords from the outlets in the corridors into their compartments in kupe class. On previous trips this was not allowed and there were signs up advising of fines if these outlets were used for anything but a shaver, but it looks as if it may be ok now. Again you may have to sling a small payment.
