I don't know if this is the right place in the forum to ask this question, but here it goes...

I know a young Russian couple who live in Voronezh. One is a nurse (female) one year out of the university working at a polyclinic and the other is a hotel clerk (male) at a large Russian-style hotel. I am a little embarrassed to ask them about money issues (because I don't know what is proper conduct), but I am really curious to see what the actual wage might be for Russian people in these types of jobs

I have read that the average Russian wage is about $500 a month, but this seems a little high in these folks case.

I will tell you what I know.

In general, people in Russia gets paid much better in large cities (econokic centers) like Moscow and St Petersburg. In fact, in Moscow, salaries are much higher than in St Petersburg. And I assume that in St Petersburg they are higher than in Voronezh.

Believe it or not, but medical professionals at the city/public clinics are paid very poorly in Russia. There are some new private clinics where the pay is better. But as a nurse at a local clinic she is probably making peanuts by US standard. I would assume no more than $200 a month and probably less. I cannot imagine that the clerk at a local hotel will be making even $500 a month since Voronezh is not a known travel destination and unlike St Petersburg or Moscow and he is not likely to come across any rich tourists willing to leave a good tip. Althought, I don't know how that works. Maybe some rich russian businessmen stay at that hotel.

Most jobs that pay nowadays in Russia are connected to finance, banking, commerce, marketing, computers, business and related fields where the salaries can be much higher. I am afraid the couple you mentioned below are relatively poor.

Well, there is no demand for people of the medical profession - there are too many of them. Her salary is probably 10000 roubles - 300$
Voronezh is a very poor city btw, it is on the Ukranian border and alot of the jobs go to Ukranians who are willing to work for 1000 to 3000 roubles a month.

Wow -

That is really some eye opening information. Thank you to everyone who replied. I suppose that purchasing power might be a little better in Russia than in the US or EU (?) Because food and essential items like clothing are cheaper to buy than in the West. Or maybe I'm completely off track here?

How does one live on $100 a month? I can't imagine you really can "live" on such a sum.

I think you are pretty on track here.

It is true that basic neccessities like food, transport, clothes, basic household items etc. are cheap, especially in small towns as well, since the prices are made that people living there can afford them.

Also, many people do not need to rent an apartment as they share it with parents, or have inherited it (their parents may have acquired it from social programes during the soviet times). Or they may be living in communal apartments.

It is possible to live on 100 dollars a month--many people do it, but it is really tough.
