Judging by the following site, it looks like St. Valentine's Day is celebrated in Russia much the same way it is in the U.S. with heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and roses (although I believe it should be an odd number though instead of an even dozen or two):

Is this something relatively new or has St. Valentine's Day been celebrated in Russia for a long time? Also, what would be an appropriate Valentine's greeting to use in a card.

I'd like to hear from a Russian, but it's my understanding that this holiday wasn't celebrated until after the fall of the USSR.
I know that Woman's Day is THE BIG ONE! |

From what I've been told...it's a new thing there...and actually Feb 23 is Men's Day and March 8 is Women's Day...I hope I have these dates right  |

Correct. Valentine's day has only become known after the fall of the Soviet Union. March 8 is a women's day in Russia where men give their loved ones and their female relatives gifts and flowers. And Feb 23rd is a the Soviet Army day that has become a "men's" day where women give their men gifts. |

"Dorogaya (insert name),
S dnyom svyatogo Valentina! Ti takaya krasivaya i chudesnaya.((What I really want to say here is "You are so beautiful and such a wonderful person." ) Spasibo tebe chto tee yest'. (Thank you for being yourself.)

Actually, "Spasibo tebe chto tee yest" means "Thank you for existing" i.e., you appreciate the fact that she exists in this world. It has nothing to do with being "yourself" i.e., displaying/manifesting your personality - totally different meaning. It sounds good, just remove the English translation of the above sentence... |

In Russia i often encounter funny opinion about St. Valentine's day. Some people think that this day was invented by merchants. More holidays, more gifts, more profit. |
