Firstly, hello to all, I stumbled across this forum when I was trying to figure out a way to contact some Russian friends of mine and like it very much. I plan on travelling to Russia to visit my friends sometime next year so this forum/website will be very helpful to me...

But back to the question at hand. I met some lovely Russian people while holidaying in Europe last year and they gave me their mobile phone numbers. I've tried texting them and so far no response! I cannot figure out whether I have the number wrong or they're just not getting my text messages, and sadly, I can't afford to call them. I am from Australia and with service provider Vodafone. The numbers I am trying to call start like this +7865*******. would anyone know what service provider they are with and if ours are compatible, or if any service providers from australia are compatible with this network? OR maybe I just have their number wrong? Your help will be much appreciated!

Thankyou in advance.

I don't have the answer to your primary question, but.....

Have you looked into international prepaid calling programs?
I live in the States & use Master Call Communications.....I'm probably paying a little too much at $0.11/minute. Still, it's convenient for me since I have an open account with them and get billed each month.
Just a thought.

I tried texting my friends and they never received any of my messages.

Good luck to you & enjoy your visit when you go!

I dont see how they can be friends if youve not kept in regular contact, and have only met them once. Just call them up using a phone card, and get their postal address! Rolling Eyes

Kesha, thanks for your info about calling cards. I hadn't thought of that and if I can't figure out a way to text them, I will look into the cheapest and most convenient calling card for me. I would prefer to text them though, I'm still hoping someone will be able to solve my problem

Fire_Goddess: as for your completely useless reply -> I never said I met them only once, infact, I lived with them for the summer while we were all in Italy studying. I though it'd be obvious from my post that I've been trying to keep in contact with them but as you can see they're not getting my text messages, which is why I'm here in the first place. My home phone doesn't allow international calling and, as a student, I can't afford to have that option. I also don't fancy the idea of talking to them from a payphone when their waking hours are quite late in Australian time. Payphones afterdark are not very safe in my area. I'm trying to figure out if there's a way I can text them to keep regular contact.

Your assumptions were amusing, I especially liked your eye rolling emoticon, as thats exactly what I was doing when I read your reply. I was looking for a little help and since you offered none... well... thanks for nothing.

You sound like a flake, im sure these people are ignoring you! Phone cards are not expensive, they come with local connection numbers so your phone will not be charged for any long distance. I find it strange that youve never thought to use a phone card before, as if you were born yesterday. Again with the assumptions Smile Typical.. instead of apologising for making a rude comment you feel the need to attack.

Fire_Goddess, to answer your newly obnoxious statement, I didn't think of calling cards because they're not all that common where I'm from, and I haven't done much international calling before. But now that it's been brought up, like I said, I'm going to look into it.

Idontknowwhat,
Go to www.ozprepaidcards.com.au and register yourself there for purchasing. They have a truckload of options and you pay them by direct deposit or whatever. My wife buys two GPS cards per month for 38.00 and the going rate is about 8 cents a minute (don't believe the crap that's advertised...your minutes go missing everytime you use it).
She can talk to her mum & co for up to 4-5 hours with each card (well, PIN number anyway). Costs a local call to connect to their number and away you go.
Other cards can be cheaper but line quality can be rubbish. If you're texting, that number you posted looks somewhat correct.
There are two types of mobile number in Russia, Regional and Federal.

Enjoy

865 is right prefix for Stavropol region.
If they live in Stavropol city the next figure is 2.
The code of Russia is 7, make sure of it, probably from your country you should dial some 0 first.

idontknowwhat,

I bought a prepaid card to call a friend of mine in Russia (www.ldpost.com) It was a good rate for me, but unfortunately very expensive for her to receive an international call on her mobile phone. It may be the same for your friends. I believe 7845 would be a city number, not a federal number, but I don't know if that makes any difference in terms of rates. MTS, one of the biggest cellular providers in Russia, has web-based text messaging (SMS). Your friends may have a different provider, but its worth checking out for anyone who might be reading this:

http://sms.mts.ru/cgi-bin/cgi.exe?function=sms_send&isFree=1&Lang=1

there's a link for other regions (not Moscow)

good luck

I have found a local provider, and I understand they are international, that specializes in Russian phone calling- very cheap- 16cents (american) a minute from here- ITI is the name- I will try to remember when I am at home to look them up.

Otherwise- there are several pre-paid phone cards that got the price down to around 22cents a minute.
