Hello! Здравствуйте!

Has anyone travelled to Russia with a musical instrument, or taken it with them on an overnight train? I'm planning a 5-6 week trip this summer, and thought I might bring my violin or viola, on the chance I could meet some musicians in Russia (Novosibirsk) and play music together. Many of my questions have been answered by reading the articles on this site, and by searching the forums, but I still have a few questions:

1. I understand it's wise to declare items like musical instruments when one arrives in the country. Has anyone done this? Should I bring proof of ownership, or a statement of its value?

2. As for taking it with me on the train, obviously the safest thing would be not to bring it at all. Or to fly. But if I did bring it, is one class safer than another? I would prefer travelling the "open" cars (platzkart), but maybe storage space is too limited. (I travelled by train in India and basically slept on top of my luggage - not very comfortable). I figure if people have no worries bringing laptops/notebooks with them on the train, I could safely take take a violin/viola.

3. Finally, by chance does anyone have any musical contacts in Novosibirsk? I'm considering taking a language course there in July, for 3 or 4 weeks, and playing music might be a nice way to meet some people.

I will appreciate any response!
