Hi guys, I am going to be spending nine months in Russia, from October to June, and need a warm coat so as not to freeze! I will be in St Petersburg throughout the winter. I am really not comfortable with the idea of wearing fur, though fake fur wouldn't bother me, and am vain enough to want a smart coat, not some sort of fleecy anorak thing. I don't mind whether I get one in England or in Russia. Can anyone recommend somewhere I can get one? And what about other clothes - is a normal outfit enough, or will I need loads of layers? Are jeans and trousers warm enough? What about skirts and tights? Sorry about all the questions! I have heard mixed reports about the coldness of the winter, so I thought I'd check it out. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hey,

I've never spent winter in St. P's but I did experience the -40 event this year in Siberia (it was amazing) and I found layers the best system, though normal clothing (and thermals) should be enough for St. P's - I brought overtrousers, goggles etc (and needed them). Bring the biggest scarf you can find and a snood if you can get hold of one - you'll be best to cover your face in St. P's due to the moist air, which makes it feel much colder than it actually is. Being a guy I haven't much experience of skirts or tights, I suppose it all depends on your British determination - I've been wearing shorts for a couple of weeks (not continuously, of course).

GOOD LUCK

The best thing to wear in Russia in the winter is the shearling coats like those here:

Called in Russia as "dublionka"

The winter in St Petersburg is mostly mild by Russian standards (usually 0 or a few degrees below 0 Celsius and can be 3-5 degrees above at times). But there can be days and weeks when the temperature falls below 10, 15 and sometimes below 20 degrees Celsius below 0, so dressing warm is essential.

I forgot to mention that within the UK, Next or Next Clearance always seem very good for BIG scarves, I think this is because they have shops in Russia. M&S do a snood in their My View From range.

I was in Petersburg in winter just once. Very cold! And I don't think jeans or skirts is a good idea. I wore tights and trousers Smile

You can get a good coat in Britain. something warm with a fleece inner coat (so a second layer) or so will suffice. Length could help prevent your butt from freezing Razz
Use thermal underwear/tights for under jeans.
Cover your head (looses most of the warmth) and hands. Buy your shoes in russia.

About layers: those are typical solutions for people not used to the climate. In the city this is inconvenient, as you will get hot once you're inside somewhere. A few warm things (good coat) and not too much heavy stuff underneath is to be preferred.

Length, length! A long coat made of woolen cloath is also a possible solution. Dublianka or good leather coat could as well solve the winterproblems. Fake fur is fake so it might not last long in a bearable condition. Warm sweater might be a good thing in the beginning of October when the heat is not yet turned on in the houses. It will be warm inside the houses when the heat is turned on, but the two weeks before that can get quite freezing. But St. Pete isn't Siberia nor Lapland, so don't worry too much.
