It dumb how "Google Earth" and "Google Maps" both don't show good detail on much of provincial Russia. Some cities with populations over 500,000 are omitted. Would have thought they'd get a bit of focus.
The tiniest towns in Australia, with populations only a few hundred are included though. |

Maybe....But why doesn't Kim Jong Il mind me watching him in his backyard jacuzzi in Pyonyang?

Yes, its very useful. Can't see what the big cost burden would be for Russia to enable more of its cities to be properly included. I mean, if Pyonyang, Mogadishu, Addis Abbaba, Lubango (some random small city in Angola), etc can be included, why not more affluent Russia? |

My wife and I enjoy Google Earth.
It does show many small cities in Russia. You have to know where the city is and then zoom in on it. Sometimes a search won't get you there.
If you zoom slowly you will see the cities start to show up.
We followed the railroad from Moscow Kursky Station to Belgorod just last week and it was a joy to watch her tell me about all the cities along the tracks.
I think it will make the next train ride to Belgorod more interesting now.
This weekend we're going to do the Trans Siberian on Google Earth.
The next weekend we will be in Moscow.

| Don't forget that many sattelite maps of Russia are still a secret since the Cold War time. Russia does not publicize its satellite images. |

I realise this Tuller, but I can absolutely guarantee that numerous cities don't have the Google Earth detail, let alone the Google Maps detail. |

This is probably the main reason for lack of detail in some cities I've checked out (ie. they have military construction factories, etc)
But, who is responsible, at the top, for Google Earth? The Americans? So, what's the big problem with the US using their own images of Russia on Google Earth? At the best resolution its hardly an invasion of privacy. In any case, Kim Jong Il obviously doesn't seem to mind...... |

Darthvader, it is even impossible to zoom in on Nevskii Prospect.
If the government of Russia was seriously attracting tourists you would think that the most famous boulevard in the country (OK some may not agree) would be there for exploration. |

I'm not so sure Nikir, I've managed to identify the exact buildings I'm staying in, in the summer on Noviy Arbat and Sadovaya in St petes.
I think in Moscow and St Petersburg the resolution is good. Much better than here in the outskirts of Newcastle. Riga and Tallin are very poor too, I can't make out much detail at all.
I have looked at the parks and the Lokomotiv stadium - since I will watch a match there (by the way does anyone now what the huge complex is just to the south east of the stadium?) |

Remember too that the images on the free earth google are a few years old so new buildings will not show...But I did the same thing and I know the city fairly well as to where things are. Very useful |
