Hello, I'm an American currently in Riga, Latvia trying to obtain a visa to Russia. I'm having trouble finding an office that issues quick visas and speaks at least a little english. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone they've used or heard about? Many thanks.

If you want to go through the agency to issue both visa support and visa itself, I don't know about anything in Latvia.

If you want to get the visa by yourself at the Russian consulate, then you can apply for visa support through the internet. In case you need a business visa support, it's better to do it while you're in Russia, so that you have originals with you (sometimes for business visas, especially long-term and multiple-entry ones Russian consulates may require original invitation).

Hope this helps. If you get lost, email me at WWu777@aol.com and I will give you more exact directions from their business card, if necessary.

Wow, that is so helpful. Today, before I got this message, I tried in the Central Station -- 5 days minimum, $185. As much as I'm loving Riga, that's far too long being here and the attitude I'm getting when I ask, as politely as I can in Latvian, whether they speak English, they get so snotty. Not that I expect Latvians to speak any other language than their own, but I didn't really expect this. Someone needs to augment the Lonely Planet guide, the part where it says that English is widely spoken. Anyways, that's an off-topic gripe. Maybe it's because it's the 4th of July at home and I'm here in the rain, with only a British expat bar to celebrate in. Smile

W: What agency was this? That's kind of ripoff. I think the agency I went to charged about 115 dollars for 5 days. Hold on, let me look for their business card. Ok here it is. I found it. The agency name is called "Pegasus Travel Agency". Their address is Kalku iela 11a. Their phone number is 722-2221 if you're calling from Riga.

Yes, they would have done that for 115 USD, but I chose the one day route, which is more expensive, the price the other place wanted for 5 days turnaround. That place was E-something at the Central Station, next to ticket office 24. Not recommended.

But Pegasus is quite a different story! Wow, Julia is a dreamboat and so helpful. I will have my Russian visa tomorrow for 185USD; no letters of invitation, no waiting forever to get it back. Too cool. The visa to Ukraine would've delayed me another two days and that's not as urgent, so I'll just get that in Tallinn (staying for about 5 days) before heading into Russia.

I'm betting that people would recommend NOT getting the Ukraine visa in Russia, right?

By the way, I asked Julia how many languages she knows and she said about seven. Thought that was amazing.
