Hi - I am about to return to St Pete after a year's exile in Singapore! Laughing I am flying into Helsinki, then taking train to SPB (always my favourite way into the country). However, I am struggling to pre-book a train ticket for Hel-SPB. Does anyone know how this can be done? www.vr.fi is a good site but it specifically says you cannot buy Russia tickets online. I could get a friend to buy them in Helsinki but would he need my passport at the time of purchase (obviously not an option!).
Anyone with recent experience of this?
Thanks!

Not terribly recent (October 2004 was the last time), but I have always bought my ticket on the day of travel. At the railway station.

It's a sit up train so there is a lot of space on it.

You will need to show your passport.

Thanks - just to close the loop on this thread, I heard back from Finnish Railways (a prompt reply to my email query submitted thru their website) - they tell me you can fax a booking request to them with your details (including credit card details) and they will either mail the ticket to you, or you can collect in person in the station (or actually on the train for the Finnish operated train Sibelius). Not sure if I want to trust my CC details on a fax, but that seems to be only option short of just turning up and hoping there is room on the next train.
