I suggest you to take the train from Moscow to Novgorod (the oldest Russian town), stay there for 2-3 days and take the bus from Novgorod to St.Petersburg.

Or more complicated route:
From Moscow to Pskov by train. 1-2 days in Pskov.
From Pskov to Novgorod by train. 1-2 days in Novgorod.
From Novgorod to St.Pete by bus.
