Do you know much about us or our country?
Would you ever like to travel here?
What are the stereo-types of us, if any?
How would we be treated by russian people? (in places like Moscow)

What for? Look at kangaroos?
Too far away and non popular to have any stereotypes.
Like English-speaking people - with first assumption 'amercan!' no? british then? no? really puzzled... Kiwi? no ideas then.

Not much. Typical combination - natives, boomerang, great barrier reef, sun, kangoos, koalas (they are in Australia, right?), Sydney opera house, ocean. Our countries don't have any significant relations. Yeah... Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlovski (I just like this woman), Steve Irvin! Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Heath Ledger (my wife likes this guy), All the rivers run. I typically don't like series but there are two exceptions - All the rivers run and Battlestar Galactica. Smile

I think you will be treated by russian people highly positive and with great interest, because people know very little or only good things about your country. It looks like that politicans and mass-media had no opportunity to spoil the attitude.

Actually I work for Australian IT company located in the Adelaide. Sometimes they surprise me. Sometimes when I expect them to be active they are inert, when I expect them to be relaxed they e-r-r-r... hyperactive! It seems because I just don't see a full picture of state of things. They very nice people and most reliable partners I ever seen.

I suppose many people here would remember "Crodoile Dandy" fims in the first second they heare about someone from Australia. The next to things are the kangaroo and the Opera Theater in Sydney.
Some will probaly remember that Australia had been a place to send exiles to.
But most people would just be friendly and ask questions about kangaroos and boomerangs Smile

What the people travel for? To look at different places, to look at different people, at different things. On my wedding I've received a gift from australian colleagues. It is the photo album called "Australia. The journey". The author is Steve Parish. Looking at these album I think there are many interesting places in Australa.

I'm an Aussie, I've been to Russia twice now, never had any real problems. I have almost always been treated well by people.

(The one time I was not, they thought I was Russian without too much money - my fiancee arranged my clothes so I looked like a local. It was a hotel restaurant in Moscow. Snobs, I guess.)

Of course, I also had my fiancee keeping an eagle eye on me Smile and handling all the language and cultural issues.

However, I never saw anyone have anything against Australians. What most people think of Australia - pretty much the sterotypes, as mentioned, plus whatever is on TV.

I never spoke to many people who could afford to visit australia. The people I did talk to thought it would be interesting to visit, some day. But for now, Visas are in the "too hard" basket for most people.

Steve Parish produces a range of pretty interesting photo books. I think I've sent a few to Russia (but I don't know you, so it wasn't the one at your wedding)

Provincial russian restaurants often have better attitude to clients compared with capital's restaurants. Few years ago I was in the business trip in one provincial city with 50 or 70 thousands of citizens. I and my colleagues asked some locals for a good place where we can drink a cup of beer. They said: "Go to the bar on the street XXXYYY". So we went to the bar. The bar was located in a cellar and we prepared to see a dirty hole with pack of drunk locals who are seeking cause for a fight. Instead of this we entered into a palace. Fine design, clean tables served as in the movie about imperial Russia, very well sexy dressed and trained waitresses, perfect cuisine, fast service, and very low prices. I've never seen such mix of good features, even in capital.

Well, so far I have only been to St Petersburg and Moscow, and I tend to go to mid-range restaurants mostly. Never had any problems in SPb, and only that one time in Moscow.

When I got to Russia in March, my fiancee took me shopping to get some warmer clothes - as an Aussie, I wasn't really equipped for -10C. She picked clothes that made me look like a "normal russian", as she described it.

I guess she was thinking that since it was the quiet season for tourists, I would avoid the attention of the police (visa checks and bribe requests) if I could blend in a little. It seems to have worked - several times I walked past police doing checks without them giving me a second glance.

"Aussie" is the short form of Australian, yes. But we pronounce it like "Ozzy".

Australia had traditionally been the British style of dialect, but with modern media culture both are quite understandable for us.

We do have the letter "u" in "colour" etc.
