Is anybody able to shed any light on this issue? I wouldn't mind purchasing a few war medals while in Russia and was just wondering how I go about getting them out of the country with the minimum of fuss. I understand that any items over 50 years old have to be registered.
I'm curious what this entails in terms of time / money / effort (hassle!)
What happens if I buy a medal from an impoversiched babushka at a market in Siberia?

Moved above post to Talk Lounge as this topic has nothing to do with visas.

Slav,
As I understand things, war medals are considered "property of the state". You aren't supposed to on-sell them etc. You could buy them but good luck getting them out. You may wind up like the US fella did at Khabarovsk trying to get out with a collection. Try a google search on that.
I personally would find the inside of a Russian Prison not to my taste.....

Enjoy

Struth, that sounds grim. Not much light you are shedding there! Please forward a link. I googled it but failed to come up with anything. Please oblige.

Slav,
Moscow Times in 2003. US serviceman was sprung by Customs at Khabarovsk, faced 7 years jail time. He should be getting out this year unless it was BS Laughing .

Enjoy
