What is the total time span for a double entry tourist visa? Would the second visit entry date must be adhered by the tourist, or is it flexible within the total time span. Would the Invitation Letter be specific for both durations and the which hotels for each visit?
I would be staying at hotels at each time, one time in Moscow and perhaps the other time in St. Petersburg. First time hotel reservation and duration would be for certain, but the second stay hotel reservation and duration, I would like to make sometime after returning back from the first visit. Thank you for your comments. |

The total maximum time span for a double-entry tourist visa is 1 month.
In your visa support (invitation) application form you should specify two time spans for your both visits, but the total period between the first entry date (of the first time span) and the last departure date (of the second time span) should be not longer than 1 month.
Officially, a double entry tourist visa gives you the permission to enter/leave Russia twice anytime during the both time spans (not necessarily on the exact dates specified on your visa). These time spans should not overlap.
Practically, during that time (1 month) you can enter Russia twice at any time you wish. The thing is that on the actual tourist visa you will only have the first (e.g. 16.09.2004) and the last date (e.g. 15.10.2004), and it will be double entry, the other dates are shown ONLY on the invitation, so the border officials will not know the exact time spans that are specified in your invitation (visa support).
Now, sometimes (very rarely and practically unheard of), the border officials may require a copy of your invitation, and in case you know you will be entering / leaving Russia outside of the time spans specified on your invitation, you may want to have the invitation that exactly corresponds to your real entry / leave dates. In this case, you can ask the travel agency to issue another invitation with the modified time spans, after you know your precise dates. (If you order it through this site, the travel agency will do it for free).
However, even if you have an invitation with different time spans or don't have an invitation at all, you should be OK anyway, as long as you still have a valid double-entry visa and you are entering Russia within the time span specified on the visa (remember, there's only one time span specified on it), you're not breaking any laws. If there are any problems, you can just say that the tour was changed, hence you're coming in on a slightly different date, and if the border officials have any questions, they can contact the travel agency (specified on your invitation) and discuss the issue with them.
So, to sum everything up, I recommend you to specify the both time spans as precise as you can, but not to worry if you are unable to travel within them. Your visa will only have the very first and the very last dates and it will be double entry. Usually this is completely fine for border officials, as long as you enter/leave Russia within this specific time span.
By the way, if you're sure about your first time span, but unsure about the second one, you could leave just 1 day between the both time spans to give yourself maximum flexibility. For example: 16.9.2004 till 25.9.2004 and 26.9.2004 till 15.10.2004. Like this you can enter and leave Russia first time anytime between 16 and 25 September and enter / leave Russia second time anytime between 26 and 15 October. |
