Hey!

We are planning on taking a long stretch after Moscow and go straight to Tomsk. But Tomsk is not available in the meny for purchasing train tickets. I see on the map that it's a slight detour from the Novosibirsk - Krasnoyarsk line, but how do we book tickets to go there? We have to go to Novosibirsk first? In the lonely planet it says about Tomsk that there is a daily train from there to Yaraskavsky in Moscow. How can we book a ticket for this train?

Thanks!

If you read Russian, you can learn about train routes and schedules from www.tutu.ru

From my brief look, it appears that the quickest train trip from Moscow to Tomsk is about 2 and 1/2 days. The one schedule I looked at showed a minimum ticket price of about 3300 rubles, for the low class of service. Most people who post about long train trips in Russia recommend higher class tickets, which (on the train I checked) run about 4400 to
5200 rubles for "kupye", or up to 20,000+ rubles for the first class (deluxe sleeper).

I don't know how you can order tickets from abroad, but if you aren't able to, and you will spend some days in Moscow, it is probably no problem to buy tickets while you are in Moscow.

If you want to take in the vast scenery, the train is the way to go! But it this is not so important to you, airline S7 can get you there for as little as 4040 rubles. Their website ( www.s7.ru ) has English, and allows you to book your tickets from anywhere. I first flew S7 last year, and was very impressed. However, their big limitation is that you can only carry 20 kg of baggage per person; if you will exceed this limit, you must buy your tickets at an S7 ticket office or airport desk, and lose the advantage (and deep discount prices) of internet ordering.

thanks a lot!

we are in it for the whole transsiberian railroad, so yes, we'll definitely go for train, then we'll continue all the way to Beijing. Strange that Tomsk is not in the menu for ordering tickets, but maybe we'll take our chances on booking it while in Moscow.

Another strange thing: In the search engine at this site it seems there's only one train per week from Ulan Baator to Beijing, wednesdays. Is this really so?
