Just got back taking our daughter back to Russia to visit her Grandparents in Kinishma. All in all a great trip !!!

Her Russian Passport Expires in December of 2010 (she she currently 15) the earliest we would go back to visit would be in the Fall of 2011.

Is is Ok to just let it expire, then start the renewal process as we get closer to going back ( assuming we will) or does it need to be renewed to avoid any unusal delays ??

We went and visited my daughter's grandparents in the Murmansk region this past June and also had a great trip. We had to renew her Russian passport before we went. It had expired in April and I sent it and the application for a new passport to the consulate in early May. I was told it would take about a week and remember receiving everything as expected.

We were able to do the application in English, but I believe they must now be done in Russian and are a little more complicated, so allow time for translation etc. if you need this. The consulate also says that you should send the expired passport with the new application. I do not know if they will issue a new passport before the old one expires, so you might want to check on this before you send off your application.
