| Nothing much to see in Ivanovo, it is a dull industrial town. It use to be known for it's large population of females, who worked in the textile mills. Both Suzdal and Kostroma are just a short bus ride away and are far more interesting than Ivanovo. |

| I've always stayed at the Sovietskaya which is in downtown but I think the Tourist is not too far away either. The Sovietskaya is a basic soviet style hotel with old furniture but is clean and safe and I have never had any problems there. Rooms with better furniture are available at additional expense and are recommended if you want to live in closer to western style accomodation but I don't find the standard rooms at the Sovietskaya that bad (old furniture doesn't bother me if the room is clean) and they are significantly cheaper. I expect the Tourist would be similar to the Sovietskaya and it is a bit newer. A friend of my friends in Ivanovo stayed there once and didn't report any problems but otherwise I haven't heard anything either way about it. If you are male don't be surprised to get a phonecall at night regarding whether you would like a prostitute sent to your room which may happen at any large hotel in an industrial city like Ivanovo. Also don't be surprised if there is no hot water as some years the city depending on its finances (Ivanovo is not a rich city even by Russian standards) turns off the hot water for the entire summer and there is nothing the hotel can do about this. Ivanovo doesn't have much to see other than a beautiful old wooden church which is rarely open to visit inside but it does have a good art gallery and textile museum and the circus is definitely worth seeing especially as the stunts are all done without safety nets. There are numerous prettier cities within easy reaching distance and Ivanovo itself has its own charm if one overlooks the amount of grey buildings and industrial areas and spends time getting to know the people. |

| I notice by your nick that you may be a soccer fan and Ivanovo does have a team, Textilchuk (I love the name, named after the city's prime industry textiles), that plays in the 3rd division. Not top level soccer but worth the minimal entry fee to experience the atmosphere and they get decent support for this level of 3000 to 5000 fans. If you want to see really good soccer travel to Yaroslavl which is one of the most beautiful cities in Russia and worth a journey anyway and try to attend a game of Shinnik who play in the 1st division against such notables as CSKA, Spartak, Lokomotive etc. Admission prices for Shinnik are also very low $2-$5 or $3 to $6 when a big team like CSKA is playing. |

Shinnik is the team in Yaroslavl which is about 180 km away. Yaroslavl is one of the oldest and pretiest cities in Russia and should be visited anyway if you are in Ivanovo. If you can coordinate this with a match though then so much the better. The Russian league is quite good and improving rapidly. I have seen a lot of matches in various European countries and I would rate the Russian league about 6th or 7th best in Europe and also much better than MLS. It has some top teams like CSKA and Lokomotiv but unlike many European leagues (Holland, Greece, Turkey) the lower table teams are also quite competitive. Not only are the ticket prices ridiculously cheap for a westerner but merchandise is also reasonably priced. Russian soccer scarfs make great gifts at home and it is pretty cool and exotic to have a Shinnik jersey to wear in Canada. The team schedule can be found in Russian on their website at http://www.shinnik.yar.ru/index.php?module=soccer&func=game_list
Shinnik (Шинник) is listed first when they are playing at home.
Unfortunately, Textilchuk, the team in Ivanovo is playing in the 3rd division (they did play at one time in the first division but haven't for about a decade). The level of play is comparable to the A-league. If you are in the city though it is still worth attending their matches. Their schedule is also on their website in russian at http://www.textilschik.infomed.ru/sezon/Calendar/ |
