What I don't know is how the countryside is between petersburg and moscow. Are there forests? Could I set up a tent in some parts out of view from roads etc? Is it legal?

We do have bikes so it is easy to get off the larger roads.

There are more chances that you ll get eaten by moskitoes and fleas than by goons Respect speed limits, make sure you have all your papers valid and enjoy the ride. There are very few orgnanised camp grounds but more forests than in Brazil
