Does anyone have any ideas where I can find out how many tourists are visiting Russia now (or last year). I'd like to know whether numbers are up, and if more people go to Moscow, Saint Petersburg, or along the Trans-Siberian.

Any help, suggestions and so forth grafetully received!

Russia at ITB-2003 in Berlin

Russia's display at the ITB-2003 International Tourism Exchange excites interest and offers great opportunities for development, Francesco Frangialli, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization said on Saturday night in Berlin, which hosts the world's largest International Tourism Exchange.

He believes that the economic and political stability of the country contributes to rapid tourism development in Russia. According to the Secretary General, Russia's tourism business is growing at 7 per cent, twice as high as the world average and three times more than the European figure.

The WTO Secretary General highly assesses what Russia has done for the organization that unites 140 world countries. He indicated that it had proved useful that Russia was elected chairman of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization last year. Tourism business in Russia is turning out to be more professional, Mr Francesco Frangialli said.

There were 7.8 milion visitors in 2002.

Russia’s share of world tourist flows is increasing. According to the Economic Development and Trade Ministry’s tourism department, the number of foreign tourists visiting Russia jumped up by 37 percent to 7.8 million people in 2002. Previously, growth came to at most 10-15 percent a year. Russians themselves are also starting to travel more in their own country as their incomes rise. In 2001, 30 million Russians travelled within the country.

According to the World Travel Organisation and GosKomStat (Russian government statistics organisation), 21 million people visited Russia in 2001 and this number grows about 15% every year.
Most of these people come to Russia from Poland and China (working visits) and quite many people make short visits from Finland.
If you talk about tourists, there are about 11 Mln coming every year, most of them visit Moscow (about 50%) and St. Petersburg (50%), other popular destinations are the Golden Ring towns, Trans-Siberian.
Most of the tourists come from Germany, USA, Scandinavian countries, France, Italy, UK.
