Can any one tell me IF & HOW I can get motor insurance in St. Petersburg to cover my journey from STB to the UK via Helsinki?
I will be driving a new Russian vehicle with temporary 14 day Russian paper plates. With the intention to export from Russia and Import to the UK.
Number and addresses would be helpful so that I can get some quotations. |

You could try Firstbrokers Oy in Helsinki.
They are on the net. |

There are 2 answers to this problem.
1 Since Russia isn't yet part of the european green card system, you will need both Russian insurance and some form of european insurance from Finland onwards.
2 Since you aim to import the car into the UK, I would get insurance in the UK for the car - with a european extension for the policy which will cover you from the Finland border.
I did this trip in reverse this summer with a UK registered vehicle. I guess the only issue is finding a UK insurance company comfortable with insuring a foregin registered vehicle.
There are numerous DIY import websites for the UK on the net and I am sure insurance companies who are willing to insure will be advertising on these sites. Phone direct to the UK and do the deal using credit cards. They would have to despatch the insurance documents to you in russia (somehow) as you might need these at the Finland Border - but I'm not sure about that - note I needed russian insurance to get my temporary import certificate for my car going into russia - so maybe the same the other way around.
Good Luck with your trip.

Thanks.
Do you know which insurance company you used in russia?
Did they speak english?
Does any one know an english speaking insurance company in st petersburg?
I have been told that the journey from St Petersburg to Helsinki can be covered by the european green card scheme. Can any body confirm this?
many thanks to one and all. |

As I said, the green card scheme works from the Finland Border - not from St Petersberg. Personally, I would expect most car dealerships to have an in house insurance broker who could arrange russain insurance from StP to the border (or to anywhere else (in russia) for any time period) - try a dealership for one of the foreign car dealers in StP - just drive around and you'll find one. Take a russian friend if you're worried about language difficulties.

Since motor insurance is now COMPULSORY in russia, any russian driver should be able to explain the ins and outs to you. |
