I want to borrow or rent or buy snow clothes, soes, gloves, and hat for 2 weeks visit to Russian this December 2005.

I check their local temperature -26 C during December in Russia. I live in Arziona, PHoenix.

I really appreciate if you have some good idea to get some clothes. You can directly send me info at mikesun1@cox.net.

If you are going to the far Noth of Russia the temperature there is about -50 C. You may buy warm clothes at any market in Russia.

Maybe you get a sponsor that can supply these guys something.

Mike, previous posts state that you should dress in layers. You cannot dress like a Russian, because you will freeze in their clothes, becuase you are not used to the cold.

Ha, Paul Holmes: We should set up a marketplace for 'instant undercover winterclothing' in Russia. 'Plastic shopping bags included'. So anyone will recognize our uniformed tourists walking around in black leather and fur coats..all supplied with the same 'undercover' labels on their bags Razz

mikesun1: What city are you visiting? Russia has many climate zones. The winter in Moscow is ineed quite cold. It can be -3C, but can dip to
-15C on some days, especially at night. It is rarely colder than -15C, but can happen as well. Why are you visiting Russia at this cold time of year?

The climate in St Petersburg is milder, but it can easily be -5C to -8C as well (althought sometimes the watehr hovers around 0C during the day). But the days are very short there in December.

Mike - you're somewhat at a disadvantage living in Phoenix, but visit places like REI.com on the web and you can find some great outdoor clothing that will help you in the cold. I live in Chicago and also visit Russia during the winter (that's the best time if you ask me!).

So... what do you need? It depends. Are you going for business and will you be shuttling between hotels and business meetings? If so, a nice winter jacket with gloves and - maybe - a hat will suffice. Anything that you would wear in Flagstaff in the winter would work just fine. Are you gonna be doing the tourist thing and tramping around Moscow all day? If so you'll need to dress in layers. Consider the following:

gortex boots or shoes
long johns
pants that permit long johns underneath! even blue jeans
wool sweater
jacket - leather, gortex, etc.

Also consider this - are 'ya really gonna be outside for 15 hours a day? Probably not. You're gonna be in and out of places all day long. I basically used the above list on a trip in Jan 2004 and found that it was pretty easy to get overheated while running around town. Layering is really important so you can pull off the outerwear while on the metro, stopping for lunch, etc.

We Americans have a tendancy to think that Russia is on a different planet - ha! Not so - we have the same type of weather in the northern parts of the US as well. You can easily dress to accomodate.

Long johns are great, but when it gets warm they are hard to remove in public. I usually go with sweat pants.
They can be taken off quickly and they also protect your nice clothes underneath.

My wife and I spent 3 weeks in Moscow from December 26- January 15 last winter and I got to say that we were hot all the time. I have found that you do a lot of walking in Russia so you are generating heat. I suppose you could get cold standing in a que (sp?) for an hour or so. But we are from Minnesota and our climate is similar to Moscow. Except Moscow does get as cold at night. They usually have cloud cover and it tends to hold the heat in. Here it's clear at night and the temps plummet.

I'd wear a leather coat,gloves (which will end up in your pocket if you do alot of walking), and a warm hat. You can get a fut hat there or where a black stocking cap like most of the locals.Have a nice time while in Russia. We had a great experience.
