The same with the famous french writer Alexandre Dumas. His Grand mother was a black from Haiti.
Both Pushkin and Dumas were born at the same period.
Did you know Puchkin was called "the French" when he was in college because of his great knowlege of the French culture/literature ?  |

Not a bad idea. I guess in your 98%-white area you're not familiar with issues that are important to the black folks. I know the southerners mostly don't like black people. No wonder you have such hostility to terms "pimp" and "hoe" that are dear to any respectable black man. |

Yes, he was from Africa. Don't remember where in Africa, but i do know that he was from around there...

Actually Spice...when it comes to US history...the worst racism came from the North. The south was actually more tolerant. The real struggles in the south stemmed from poverty and competition but the true hatred was in the North. Our civil war was not fought over just because of slavery...that actually was a very minor reason. It had more so to do with new territories being admitted into the Union.Some blacks actually had slaves of thier own. Anyways Racism is prevalent in so many cultures and societies. Kentucky wasn't really a true southern state back then. And places like South Carolina were largely populated by blacks.

Most people with the Southern accent don't like black people. That's my observation. In Kentucky, saying the "n" word is their 2nd favorite past time after horses. |

The Southern States, as far as I know, fought on the Confederate side in the American Civil War. And the KKK was based in the South USA too. And the black slaves from the plantations in the South escaped to the North, and to Canada. No, the Southern States were the racist ones. Just my two cents...

It's not a favorite word of mine...anyone with some class doesn't say this...besides the blacks are the ones who say the "n" word like it's going out of style... |

Well the North was the conduit for cotton to be ship from the Southern states to the North and it was here in New York City that did all the banking and shipping to England that really kept slavery alive in the South. Money was to be made on both ends: North (bankers and shipping)and South (cotton). One has to remember that only a few percentage of people in the South owned slaves, and of course in the North too, however, the majority of whites that lived in the Piedmont and Ozarks were very poor and did most of their on farming.. It was the Abolitionist Movement started by the Quakers in the North and eventually the educated populace in the South that wanted slavery to end. Plus, the English Abolitionsists who successfully ended slavery in England was now putting pressure on cotton buyers in their own country thus causing a ripple effect across the Atlantic. Believe me, NYC did not want to see slavery to end...everyone thinks that NYC is very liberal...Remember it was New York City that had a strong Loyalist background during the Revolutionary War and many of those Loyalists fled to Canada and back to England...The wealthy in NYC also paid for their sons not to fight in the Civil War....True Surf, tolerant the Southerners were...they didn't have problems of sleeping with black women and having children with them of course this was not out in the open...but Southern wives were not dumb and knew who their husbands black mistresses' were...also in New Orleans the Mulatto class had special rights than a full black person. So I would agree with you on the South being more tolerant as far as understanding roles were, however, once a black person tried to challenge his/her roll in the South that's where they would come across hatred and even death. In the North it was some blacks who worked in homes but it was mostly new white immigrants who suffered hatred in the North i.e. Irish...Today it's blacks and hispanics that Northerners don't like. Only speaking from experience of living here. |

| As a African-American I'm pleased they are discussing this. I wonder if they discussed other Blacks from America like Jimmy Winkfield who went to Czarist Russia and raced horses like he did when he was at the Kentucky Derby. There is a book about Pushkin's grandfather that was recently published about a year ago. |
