Help! Consulate won't accept my application

Consulate won't accept my application So I purchased an invitation here for a 3 weeks long summer trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg. The invitation says that I will "stay" at hotel Cosmo and Neva. When I go the consulate this morning, the fellow at the counter won't accept my application saying that there's no way that I can pay for all those hotels. The reality is I'm only going for only about 16-17 days and I'm staying at a friend's place. What should I do now? I won't be able to apply for a private visa so I've to get a tourist visa. So do I have to buy another invitation? (with the exact dates?) (and is there an option to request names for "cheaper hotels" on the invitation?) Anyone here has a similar problem before? Please help!
