In order to highlight some opinions and see what the prevailing mood is I thought it best to conduct some research...
Personally, I am struggling to understand why the makeover was necessary including the "this is like" bit and the requirement to re-register and the fact that when you try to log into the forum the screen does not default to the forum screen. In addition, parts of the website information which I have contributed to in the past are now OUT OF DATE and misleading. London Embassy visa information and getting to Russia in a car to name two sections. It begs the question how much else is inaccurate? Probably quite alot I suspect. There also appears to be no corporate presence on the forum and only one volunteer moderating it.
Unless something changes this site will die. The owner appears to expend NO EFFORT to correct inaccuracies....
So I throw open the question.... |

Well yes, it wasn't broken and didn't need fixing.
But now that its fixed lets see what needs fine tuning. Or any sort of tuning FTM.
My suggestion and feedback is to make it a single log in and straight into the forum. It's the single, most influential part of WTR and there is currently nothing like
More mods, luckily I updated my email before the makeover but some very obviously didn't.
WTR has always been pretty free easy and reliable, aimed at attracting travelers of all nationalitiess and persuasions, but maybe all the questions are answered and there is nothing more to ask or tell.
Just update your own out of date stuff at your convenience. Kind of like the self serve checkouts at the supermarkets now. |

I'm afraid the "This is Like" loading applet thing, the Facebook box, or something else on the new-look site, slows the initial access down far too much. I've travelled a lot in the last few years and not everywhere has blindingly fast Internet speeds, and/or not all PCs are high-powered enough to perhaps speed up access to WTR. Not quite sure what the slowness issue is.
As Nikir says, logging into the site, to then click on another tab, to then gain access to the Forums (where people DO go for vital advice) is not the best idea. However, access overall is laborious because of the applet whatnot which needs to process (for too long) before any typing of usernames, etc.
The net result is that people may not bother persevering to access the Forums. So, maybe there is less activity in the Forums than there used to be.
Don't really know what the "This is Like" box is supposed to be for. Its a major distraction (for my simple mind, anyway).
Still, maybe tourism to Russia has dropped off a bit? There's been some huge economic crises....
The beauty of the OLD WTR website setup was its simplicity. Sure, it looked old, but, it was very effective in giving tourists fast information.
WTR is a wonderful resource though. And I thank Dmitry and others who have helped me out GREATLY in the past here! |

Becoming accustomed to the new format was strange at first. It felt the change happened overnight. I don't mind the small growing pains that occur with change, but I noticed all of my original posts since Autumn, 2004 -- had completely vanished. But strangely, my private messages have been preserved since then.
Maybe a couple of other Mods experienced this as well.
Not sure if I like the newer format/database. It feels too impersonal. I miss the original - with more humanity, especially. |
