I just came back from St. Petersburg last week, and now seriously concidering moving there for 3-4 months out of a year.
I met up with a friend from Canada while I was there, and he has dual citizenship, which lets him come and go as he pleases and stay for as long as he wants.
I would like to apply for the same thing, but cannot find any information how to do it. Maybe I'm blind, but I'm not seeing anything on theCanadian Russian consulate's web page. Going to try to call them on Monday.
I need to know how difficult it would be for me to get dual citizenship.
I was born in St. Petersburg and moved to Canada in 1991, and I do have a propiska in St. Petersburg if that helps.

Need2know,
If you have not formally renounced your Russian Citizenship, then you are a Russian Citizen (I assume your parents were Russian?).

Becoming a Canadian citizen without formal renunciation of Russian Citizenship means (according to Russian law) you are still considered a Russian.

Apply at the Russian Embassy for a Russian foreign passport. You should be able to do this, but may take a long time to get it.

They'll (Embassy) have the info and wherewithall, maybe just not in the timeframe you hope for.

One last thing....make sure you have some sort of formal statement that you do not have to do 2 years in the army (if you're a guy that is!).

no passport doesn't mean no citizenship. i'm sure you're a citizen still. just go to the embassy and apply for a passport.

think you don't need military service fixed if you're older than 30-something. but, i'm really not sure how exactly it goes.

the only thing you're not entitled if you get a passport abroad is interniy pasport.

The cut-off for military service is twenty-eight I think but it's only a matter of money ($500 say) if you do want subscription papers to be 'ignored' if you are still eligible.

as dual citizen you can bring them papers stating you've served army or civil service in the country you're a citizen of.
