Great forum, this! It's exactly what I've been searching for.

Anyway, I have a couple of problems I was hoping you could help me with. You see, me and my buddy (let's call him P) have planned to make a trip which involves driving a car from St Petersburg to Moscow.

P and I live in Sweden, so our original plan was to buy a cheap car over here and drive it all the way to Moscow, via Helsinki and St Petersburg. We quickly came to our senses though, as we learned that importing a car into Russia is a myriad of bureaucracy.

So, the alternative plan is to take a bus from Helsinki to St Petersburg, and buy the car there instead. That raises a couple of questions: how expensive are cars in Russia (an old Lada would do just fine), and is it even possible for foreigners to buy them?

How are the roads between the cities? As our aim is to experience the real Russia, it would be great if we could ditch the highway in favour of countryside roads and rural villages. Or is it a hopeless undertaking?

My last question may sound a bit silly, but as I don't like surprises, it's better to ask than getting into trouble for nothing. So, is it legal to drive a car in Russia with a Swedish drivers license?

I think that's it. Thank you for taking your time. Smile

From what I've read in these forums it's also a nightmare to purchase a car in Russia. You might be better off renting a car, take the train, or fly.

Lets be realistic.
To buy a car for one 700kms journey is a bit silly and totally impractical in any country let alone russia.
Just take your own car from sweden (if you have one). It will be the simplest option. The requirements of taking your own car to russia are listed in the website but you need a drivers license (sw), an international driving permit - available i assume from (sw) motoring organisations or the (sw) police - your original car registration papers, buy russian car insurance at or before the border on the finnish side. Lots of posts about russian car insurance on forum here - just search. Taking a rented or borrowed car into russia will also require written permission from the legal owner of the vehicle.
