seems to be impossible for me these days. I wonder if more of you experience this. It's a bit annoying for me, as I am used to go to the search page straight away, instead of looking at the forum's main page. This doesn't work now.

The "auto login" checkbox has disappeared. Some new way of keeping spammers out? Well, doesn't seem to be working....

Yes, it's very annoying. Not only the checkbox has disappeared. It does not keep the login credentials in the session. You can log in and try to post something and it would ask to re-login when you're trying to submit your post.

That is probably peculiar to IE. I use Firefox, and it auto fills the boxes, all I have to do is type the first letter, it does the rest.

Your problems stem from the fact that you can't spell worth a fiddler's fart. Take an ESL course, and you'll be fine. Smile

Apparently this problem is peculiar to IE because I use the Opera browser and have never had any problems logging in at this site. In fact, when I use Opera's "Wand" function it takes me a grand total of just one mouse click to login. Cool

It's a cookie problem and not browser dependant. For several years now I have been able to visit WTR and not have to log in since a cookie kept my id/password - that's changed within the last few months. I have to log in everytime. A real pain. For those of you saying "it's just one click, or my browser populates the login field", that's what all modern browsers do. We need to figure out why the cookie generation/validation has stopped.

"Spasibo" for this information, but please explain to me why this isn't at least in part a browser issue if those of us using Firefox and Opera aren't having any problems logging in. I'm not a computer professional so please be patient with me because I have no idea what you mean by cookie generation/validation. However, I would be interested to know why this would cause users of IE to have problems logging in at this site, but not Firefox and Opera users Question

In any event, it is free to download Opera at opera.com and I believe there is no charge for Firefox either. I feel fortunate that some of my friends in Norway told me about Opera and I only wish I had started using this great product sooner, especially since it is faster and more secure than IE.

All the wand function does is remember your name/password - you still have to click login. All the browsers offer this functionality.

What should happen is when you visit wtr.net is that you are NOT prompted to login - you should be able to view the forum and immediately post a new message and have the site know who you are. The reason this is no longer happening is because the site is no longer offering/validating cookies.

Also, as an aside, why is Opera and Firefox more secure than IE? I use IE for all of my financial/banking information - should I change browsers?

They are no more secure. IE is secure as any browser. Its the sites that provide secure encyption. You are right about the WTR site not providing cookies. In fact you are right about everything you say. I don't know why the cookies disappeared. that just happened over the recent past. Only Dmitry would have the answer for that.

I'm right about everything I say.

Yeah, I knew about the security thing - I get a laugh when somebody says IE sucks and this or that is better. I've yet to see anyone come up with a reason other than "I hate Bill Gates" - fine. But say that. Don't say that IE isn't secure, lacks features, etc. That shit pisses me off.

snicker snicker snicker.

Very Happy

"Spasibo" danbrew for your very clear explanation.

I'm not a very technical person, but I'll do my best to give you an answer. A couple of the reasons why Opera is more secure than IE is because Opera doesn’t support something called ActiveX technology along with something else called Visual Basic scripts. It is my understanding that Spyware problems associated with ActiveX and viruses associated with Visual Basic aren't problems for users of the Opera browser.

If you are satisfied with IE and feel confident using this browser for all of your financial/banking transactions then you probably shouldn't change browsers. For me personally, switching to Opera has been a very positive experience and my only regret is that I didn't make the change a lot sooner.

When I first downloaded Opera during the summer of 2005, it had features such as tabbed browsing and "zoom," which is a quick and easy way to increase the size of the print. I believe that IE has since added tabbed browsing and may have also added a "zoom" feature as well, but at least when I made the switch, IE lacked these features.

When I get a chance to speak again with some of the computer professionals I know who prefer Opera over IE, I'll ask them what some of the other security reasons are for using Opera besides not supporting ActiveX technology and the Visual Basic scripts. Also, if you have any information about improvements to IE security that Microsoft has made, I would like to learn about these as well.

In any event, since this discussion about browsers is getting way off the original topic of "Staying logged in," I suggest that we consider moving this discussion about the pros and cons of the various browsers to the following thread that I started the week after I got back from my last trip to Norway.
