Hi
I am a british citizen of Indian descent who will be visiting Moscow & St.Petersberg in September. I will probably stay in the Renaissance in Moscow and travel in to the centre to take in the sights and to also enjoy the nightlife.
Can anybody tell how safe Moscow is for Indian people. Have there been many racist attaacks by skinheads on Indian tourists. Also do the police hassle Indian tourists more than other tourists.
Can somebody also advise if Indians are allowed entry into bars and clubs or does 'face control' security stop them entering.
I may sound paranoid but I have heard that there is a lot of racism in Russia.
Thanks |

Indian Bob,
Go and google for "St Petersberg and Racist". You will see tonnes of reports detailing the racist epidemic sweeping Russia. Non whites including Indians are being targetted by an increasingly daring neo nazis. Just today, an Indian medical student was stabbed in the neck as he was returning to his hostel. Children as young as 5 year old have been beaten and stabbed by these racist mofos. So forget about touring Russia man. Go spend your money somewhere else and live to tell about it. |

| Unfortunally its true. Dont walk alone in the night in unknown not crowded places. Dont use night electric train, bus if you alone there. But don't say that it happens only in Russia. When I have been to Holland about 3 month I saw the same situation. |

Oh please NO, not this discussion again!
I entered the words race and racism in the search function. It turned up 98 matches. http://www.waytorussia.net/TalkLounge/search.php?mode=results
Read these please before starting up this same tired conversation.
I will sum it up for you: Russia is racist.
Now go read. |

I am sure that a typical tourst that stays at a decent hotel and sticks to the very center of the city during day hours should be pretty safe. The question, why do you need to go there when there's a chance of racist attacks or hate there? |

Just because racism is high in a country you should not stop going there!!
Look at South Africa crime rate is high there but still alot of tourist choose it as a holiday destination every year!! The only difference is that they have to take more precautions between a country with high crime rate or racism and a country with a low crime rate or racism!! |

High racist crime rate is a good enough reason for not going somewhere.
But like Spice said, if you think there is a risk for you, don't go.
If you want to go there to visit a girl and not the country (like many foreign single men going to Russia usually do) better agree on an appointement somewhere like Turkey for instance which is not a costy country and easy for Russians to get a visa (20 dollars and you got the visa at the airport). |

I'm russian and can say that the Moscow and St. Peterburgh has much higher amount of stupid evil bastards who seek problems for themselves and for people around them. There is always chance that your nationality will attract attention of some drunk and aggressive idiot. So take precautions - don't walk single in dark places, avoid suspiciously looking places or bars etc, etc.
If you visit province your nationality most likely will be unnoticed at all. |
