I have some serious questions. I am from the U.S. and my wife is from Russia. We have a daugther born here in the U.S. however my wife wanted her to have a Russia citizenship as well. She said it would be easier to travel if we had it. At the time she thought it was still possible for her to travel on the U.S. passport and visa. My concern is after doing this I was informed that since the daugther has a Russian citizenship she can not obtain a visa. My fear is having probplems there either entering or leaving. I want her to still travel on her U.S. passport with a visa. My wife says everyone does it but when I read all the small details and complications I am really worried...
We are coming to Russia in end of December. So I have both invitations in hand but no visas yet. Will they issue a visa for my daughter even if she has a Russia citizenship and if they don't do I run a risk of problems with entering her on a Russian passport and leaving on a U.S. passport. She would have no visa... It all seems strange to me... Does anyone know ! Thanks So Much If You Can Help ! |

This is very common - your daughter will simply show her Russian passport when leaving the US and when arriving and leaving Russia and then show her US passport when arriving back in the US.
Dual citizenship, and traveling on a Russian passport, does have potential pitfalls. The US isn't going to be able to do much if your daughter runs into legal problems while in Russia. But how realistic is that? In addition, men of military conscription age face potential conscription when traveling on a Russia passport within Russia. Again, though, not realistic for a child and a moot point for a girl.
I'm sure some folks who have traveled in these circumstances will chime in and offer their two cents. My two cents is that it is very common and you have nothing to worry about.

having two nationalities and passports is the best of both worlds. No queueing for visas OR committing valuable passports to the postal system. At the US end leaving the US show the US passport. The airline in the US will want to see the Russian passport (so they don't get fined by the Russians for bringing people without valid travel documents). At the Russian end show the Russian passport entering. Onm the way back show the Russian Passport leaving Russia. In Russia the airline will want to see the US passport for similar reasons. In the US show the US passport on arrival.
My 2c too.

It is possible, I have it and I am 52 years old, got it when I was 30 but look do not do it yourself contact an International Law Attorney, I use a french guy called Joseph A. de LA CUETARA, i lost his contact, he was good!!! There are a lot of things he explained to me that I am glad I have paid for hearing....
Some Attorneys will say no, you can not others will say yes and will keep you money, others will do it and then call the police so they will defend you also... be careful, use my experience...and by the way do not use an Attorney recommended by the Embassy!!! |
