Does the 72 hours to register begin when i arrive in the city, or when I leave the last? It would make more sense if it was arrival so do Russian train tickets have your expected time of arrival on them?
If I arrive at say 12 midday on Friday in Moscow can i leave right up until 12 midday wednesday without registering? I will probably be cutting it very fine, that's all.
Thanks!

The 72-hour clock starts according to the arrival date/time on your train, airline, bus, etc. ticket. If there is ever an issue with whether or not you registered on-time, they would refer back to your original travel documents for your date and time of arrival.

Secondly, because I have read so many posts and stories about having problems with entering and exiting the country because of Visa registration requirements (or failure to do so), I wouldn't recommend wasting any time on registering the Visa. If you are staying at a hotel, they will usually do this for you (some may charge a very small fee - mine was only about $4 USD) and they can perhaps advise you if in fact you won't need to register your Visa.

Otherwise, I personally recommend at least calling OVIR and asking them. That way, you are sure not to have any problems upon leaving.

Hope this helps!

Yes, offficially it's 72 hours on working days, so if you arrive around noon Friday (and can prove it), then you can stay until noon Wednesday. But if it's not your first city in Russia, you should have the registration made before.

If you want a reference to the law it's here: http://waytorussia.net/RussianVisa/Registration.html

To Thomastpa2: It's not possible to reach OVIR on the phone and I would be very amazed if they spoke English Smile
I agree that it's better to register, though, if you can, not to push it too much...

LOL. I completely agree about contacting OVIR. I found it nothing less than a miracle dealing with airport personnel let alone those at OVIR! Wink

Are you staying at a hotel? If so, they should do it for you. Like we said before, you should register ASAP to avoid problems.

i don't know where i'll stay in moscow yet. A hotel would be nice but i think i just don't have the money. I could afford maybe USD$35 a night max.... Anyone one know one for that much? Thanks.
