I would like to find a good, relatively inexpensive hotel located in the center (Nevskii Prospect). I am looking for a clean, comfortable and safe place to stay/sleep where I can also register my visa quickly.
Any recommendations?

Good & Inexpensive hotels in the centre are hard to come by. You may want to check into a slightly higher priced hotel for a few days (also getting them to register your visa!) and then look for an apartment. There are lots available on the internet and it will usually be much cheaper and a lot less hassle if you are going to meet any friends.

I underestand it's expensive. Are there any cheaper alternatives to Astoria, Grand Hotel Europe and SAS located on Nevskii Prospect?
I see that these hotels charge more than $400/night at the end of May. That is beyond expensive.
If I can find something for $200 a night, that would be good enough.
Any suggestions? |

| You can rent private apartments from 50 USD to 150 USD per night. Type st petersburg+russia+apartments on google and you ll find lots of offers. |

| Mr Spice check the link given to you. It is excellent reviews on many hotels then the website gotorussia.com has a place to reserve these hotels. You can get decent hotel for $100.00 plus this site also has apartments for less than that. |

| Say I do rent an apartment on Nevskii. I need a place where they can easily and seamlessly register my visa, just loike they do in a hotel. I don't want to deal with this stuff. I used to live in Russia and know that it's best not to deal with any beauracracy by yourself and use established organizations, like large hotels for it. |

| We are booked at the Hotel Moscva late June which is prime season and are paying about $100 per night for a double with a roll away bed. It is very close to metro and is at the end of Nevsky Prospect. |

| The Hotel Dostoevsky is within a 5 minute walk of Nevsky, and much cheaper than $200 if that helps. |

I second the Hotel Moskva, though I wouldn't exactly call that the center.
If you're really looking to save, the Hotel Oktyabrskaya is right next to Moscow Station at the end of Nevsky, but it's a little dumpy. |

Randhouse is a great place to stay. About two blocks from Nev. Prostpkt. and very friendly staff, helpful, and safe.
I have it on my web site even though I get nothing from them. I just like it.

I stay with friends for free, but I met PLENTY of savvy tourists who stayed at a hostel near the Neva that liked it alot. Go to Hostelz.com and check it out. The one I heard most about rented single and double rooms as well. Something like $30-40.
I managed to stay 2 nights at the Europa. You DONT want to know how much THAT costs LOL |
