I am a teacher, visiting St P with a group of 5 16/17 year old pupils, just starting Russian. We will be there for the first week of April. Can anyone advise as to how cold/wet it is likely to be ? Do we need wellies, or will stout trainers and jeans be adequate ?
What's it like going out in the evening ? Will it be dark early, and how safe is it?
Any info / tips gratefully received !

About safety and evenings: try to avoid outskirts of the city after midnight and everything should be ok Smile
Weather in Spb is very unstable. It can be rainy or sunny or cold. But still in April it's often rainy and quite dirty cause the snow is melting... But this winter it's not so snowy so... Temperature shouldn't fall behind -10 degrees or rise above +15 degrees but still I can't garantee anything Smile
In center of the city you can walk everytime and it will be ok... And I suppose it woun't be interesting to explore the outskirts espescially in the night Smile
Also I advice you to avoid Sennaia square - this is historicaly very bad place: now there are drugsellers, pickpocketers and lots of other unpleasent guys.

Thanks, Camrade, that's helpful. Just discovered this site tonight, and I can see it will be very useful over the next few weeks. I'll recommend it to my pupils, for all the questions I can't answer !

Hope you have a wonderful trip. I have found the city to be very user-friendly at night. So many cultural things to do. I also have a friend that stages "Russian Evenings" they invite you to a comfortable home, provide dinner etc. Since she is part of a Russian Puppet troupe she and or her collegues either put on a brief show or assist in making a puppet as a momento of the visit.
It is a wonderful city. If you need any help or guides please see my web site --www.russian-tour-guide.com
Regards,
Steve
