We have to leave Russia next week to apply for our new business visas and will be going to the Netherlands - The Hague, to apply for our visas as my husband will be having a conference in town. As he will be in meetings for the whole week, can I and my child apply the visas on behalf of him, and ourselves (without his presence) and will we be able to get our passports back on the same day if we pay for the 24-hour service? Please note that we are holding Canadian passports. Will that be a problem for us to apply at the Russian Consulate?

I don't know about that particular embassy in The Hague, you shouldn't have problems applying for a visa there as Canadian citizens. You should be able to apply on behalf--just bring all necessary documents and passports. However all of you have to leave Russia and re-enter again on the new visas. There are no exceptions on that rule.

The consulates all have websites, why don't you simply visit the one for your particular purpose and make use of their free information service? Smile

The following url would be a good place to begin...

Thank you very much for the info. I have tried to open the English language section at the website but was not able to. You can open the Russian and the Dutch instructions though and unfortunately I cannot read both of the above languages.

Thanks! I hope so too. I heard the people in Holland, Amstersdam, The Hague, etc are very friendly people and almost everybody speaks English and I certainly hope that is so too in the Consulate. I will leave Russia tomorrow then.

The Dutch will speak certainly a minimum of their own dialect, Flemish, French, English and German... you're so right there... Smile

I did notice that some pages were down, but it was still the best internet address to refer you to, regardless...

BUT this is not a Dutch institution we're talking of... it's Russian... and there will almost certainly not be as much flexibility on the polyglot front - strange really, but it's something I notice whenever doing anything as simple as even flying with Aeroflot... the staff have very poor multi-lingual standards when compared to their international opposites... Sad

It's pot luck, but I do wish you a trouble free enquiry with them...

My experience is that the people at the Russian consulate in The Hague speak some English and no Dutch.

It's not necessary to be present when applying for visas. Many visas are handled through visa agencies.
