I saw it again on HBO today.So the movie ends by Chris Kelvin leaving the shuttle and going back onto the space station as it's swallowed by the Planet, then believing he is back on Earth and living his old life.Then Kelvin cuts his finger, it heals and he realizes he's on Solaris, the world around him is a construct of his mind and he can make his wife materialize.So he does and they forgive each other and kiss and music plays...
It was sad and sweet and seemed a natural and believable conclusion.It seemed the right ending that he would choose to remain in a fantasy world with a reconstruction of his dead wife as he remembered her and they would try to live as they did before. |

The ketchup joke doesn't translate at all, not that you're missing much:). What I find interesting is how so many Russians complain about violent American movies, but they eat them up with a spoon.
The Simpsons and South Park don't translate well, either, but are still popular. |

my last russian film so far was 'solyaris' i guess. i was looking for some time if i could find a copy of tarkovsky's zerkalo too, as i read some quite good reviews on that. of the more modern russian cinema i only know russian ark, which was in the theatres some 2 years ago here.
i found it especially fascinating that it was actually made in a single shot, which was as i see it a remarkable tour de force. but knowing it in advance i hardly dared to look away from the screen  as i needed to be sure about that...
i remember this kazach(?) film from the rotterdam film festival too, about 2 farmers in the plains of kazachstan who find an american woman that somehow fell out of a plane. it seemed a bit woman-unfriendly, so many people turned away. it was a nice film in a way though, even though i forgot much of it, including the title:P |

First: since "Nu Pogodi" isn't a movie, that would be Bronenosets Potyomkin. How cultured.

Of latest films I like 'Voditel dlya Very'. Its nicely shot I think. If we only could learn how to make films more joyful...
And I also like films in 'New-European' style. I'm not sure if its proper term.
I mean things like 'Lock stock and 2 smoking barrels'
Do anyone know any other like that and 'The snatch'? |

Honestly I aint dig it at all.
The point is - I've bad copy, without English. Plus - the movie is extremely cinical
BTW - '51 State' - isnt bad. I mean this Irish guy. Especially the episode when he purposedly comes to the bar which belongs to M.U. football fans, wearing T-short of Liverpoul (or some other - dont remember) ))
The other one, black American, is another thing. Rather funny too. They should scorn at him a bit more. |

Well, what if those films we talk about are a bit Russian in spirit?
OK. Russian ones.
If you can find it you should see 'Peter I', 'Alexandr Nevsky', 'Suvorov', 'Korabli shturmuyut bastiony'. All those are old, B/W, 'Stalin's' films but they are still great!
If you'll learn to filter out communist propaganda and enjoy the film itself - its gorgeous!
The later 2 can only be found on VHS, at Gorbushka. Probably ordered on the NET. It's all about days of Russian glory - war, building of a powerful state, heroism etc. Great actors! Nice filming! You wont need any special effects at all. This is real stuff.
Later ones.
1. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. I bought myself every film of the series.
Sometimes Livanov and Solomin seem to be making fun of their own caracters, dont you think? 'Baskerwill hound' - is the best in the series, IMHO. A lot of fun (sure its spooky too) . And the music!!! You wont forget it ever!
BTW the films were digitally processed and restored recently as well as some others.
2. Kin-dza-dza.
Really great but not eazy to understand. One has to experience some kind of oppression to get it in full.
Colored pants signifying social position of a person - is quite a find.
3. 'Zdravsvuyte Ya Vasha Tetya' - very funny stuff. About a street bum who was forced to cross-dress and peform as an excentric Brazilian woman, a millioner. Hilarious! |

I've always liked movies Brat 1 and Brat 2, Osobennosti nacionalnoi ohoty/rybalki etc
And recently I've seen movie "Kukushka" That's extremely great but quite pessimistic one... Pessimistic concerning russians |
