Is is possible to include in the price of the ticket some stop overs? So far the information I have seen doesn't really mention this. For example, can you get off the train for a couple of nights at some of the cities on the route?

Actually you can't include stop overs in the price of your tickets as normally you buy tickets to get from point A to point B. But you can always hopp on and off wherever you wish and catch up another train in couple of days. There is no such "Trans-Sib train" but there are dozens of ones heading both directions along the route. Dozens of trains go through the cities along the route daily. So, you can buy tickets for your next destination at the train station or have them purchased in advance concerning time you want to spend at the place of stop. What would be your recommendations for 2 stops on the trip, and where are the best places to purchase train tickets? I have read somewhere that Russian regulations state that train tickets have to be purchased 45 days in advance. Is this true? Or can you simply buy a ticket from the train station?

It is hard to suggest 2 stops. Surely, Irkutsk for a trip to lake Baikal is a must. Krasnoyarsk, not only because I am here but there are interesting places to see here as well. I'd rate it as #2. If you start your trip from Moscow as I guess, you'd feel bored to travel non-stop almost 4000 km. You might like to break it up. Between Krasnoyarsk and Moscow the common stops are: Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Kazan'. In terms of interest I'd rate them on this leg as #1- Yekaterinburg, #2- Kazan', #3- Novosibirsk. You can also buy them through a Russian travel agency for extra charge. Also you can buy them through a western travel agency for even more extra charge. Regarding the 45 days, the tickets can not be purchased in advance more than 45 days. Although I noticed, that through travel agencies they can be sold more than 45 days in advance. Anatoliy.
