Webmaster

I just read at this website that April is not a good time for visiting Baikal Lake and Olkhon Island...why is that?...can you be a little more specific?.

Is it really bad going there by April?

...to see much when it's frozen solid.

I was at Lake Baikal in late May early June a few years back. It was beautiful, but the lake was frozen solid. There were still quite a few folks with booths set up selling smoked omul. You gotta try it to believe it. Excellent stuff.

The wind coming off the lake is going to be very cold for anyone not accustomed to northern climes.

ok, so in May I should expect the lake to be frozen. What about Olkhon Island? Is it still worth to visit when the lake is frozen and with the climate like this?
Thank you

I was at the Baikal in mid June, the lake was not frozen, but it was damn cold there on a bike since it was rainy, especially after crossing the Gobi! Ulan Ude has some mongolian influence, which makes it exotic in Russia : you can visit shamans and there are some few buddhist temples.

I will bring winter clothes then. Should I visit Ulan Ude? The thing is that I start in Beijing and I'll be for 8 days in Mongolia so if it's gonna be quite simmilar Ulan Ude to some stuff that I'll be seeing in Mongolia maybe I should use those days to go into Olkhon Island insted?

Ulan Ude has a mixture of russian and mongolian infuences, so it is unique and you ll notice the difference as soon as you reach the border (european faces!! european toilets!! deep mattresses!!Wink )

For more informations about the town, follow this link : http://www.waytorussia.net/Siberia/UlanUde/Guide.html

If you had a choice between cultural visits and sports/wild nature, what would you choose?
