Hi - I want to go to Moscow/St Petes next December.
As I teach, I may have to be there over Xmas.
I know the Orthodox Xmas is the 7 Jan, but is the 25th Dec celebrated in any way or not?
The reason Im asking is cos I want to do a homestay and am just wondering if this will be possible at this time, unless I do my train journey on this day?

Any advice much appreciated!

Thanks

The Christmas is celebrated in Russia on 7th January, so almost nobody celebrates it on 25th December. But it shouldn't be an obstacle for you staying with a family, and everything (including trains) works fine even on the New Year and on orthodox Christmas (Russian railways are even arranging more trains on these days and put their prices 12% down), so, of course, it will be a good time!

Also, you may be interested in posting your profile and photo on our new resource to arrange a homestay in Russia: http://flatmates.ru/eng/ - like this you will have more chances of finding the people you like to stay with and also maybe you can arrange it for free, in exchange for language lessons, or maybe just like that....
