I know I have to always carry my passport and visa with me in Russia. Obviously, I don't know to lose them. Can someone share his/her experiences on the best place to put documents?
The "Practicalities" page recommends money belts. But I heard that no too many Russians carry those belts and I don't want to look strange or out of place with my money belt.
Anywhere I went in the world, I always locked my documents in hotel's safe and never worried about any of this, but I cannot do that in Russia.
Thanks. |

I had a zipped belt that looks like a normal leather belt to hide the cash, but since i got wet many times on the bike, some notes got stained and refused for change (russians are very picky about the appearance of your dollars).
For documents, keep them in a tissue holster on your body, under your clothes. It s invisible, so unlikely to attract attention in public transports. |

| Well if you have a jacket with a front zipper pocket i think that would be the safest. I kept mine in there my whole time while i was in Moscow (3 weeks) and i didnt have to worry about it at all. You know a back pocket or side pocket in pants the passport would get bent or damaged but in a front zipper pocket you can see if someone is trying to pitch pocket you and there can be no damage to it. Id suggest some pocket with a zipper except the back. |

Everybody in Russia has to carry their passport with them at all times. Therefore there are lots of kiosks on the street or at subway stations which sell plastic covers for a passport. I bought one that says "Russkiy Pasport" and put my British passport in this. That way I just carry it in my from jeans pocket and it is protected from wear and from sweat. I also made two photocopies of all documents (passport ID page, visa page, plane tickets, credit cards) and I carry one copy in a ziploc bag inside a small wallet that hangs inside the front of my jeans attached with a belt loop. The ziploc is to prevent sweat damage. The other copy is hidden somewhere in my hotel room.
If any real documents get stolen, I will always have one of the copies to use to help the police and consulate to fix things up.
Similarly, there is some cash in various locations so that nobody can steal all of it. I used to carry US dollars but I think next time I will carry Euros. They seem to be more popular these days. |

I met a famous travel photographer who suggested that you carry two wallets/passport folders. Thieves know about the money belts, passports inside shirts, etc. He has been robbed several times and gave them his old, cancelled credits cards and expired passport.
He also wears his backpack on his chest to prevent theft. Of course, he is carrying in it camera equipment worth $20,000. |

in spite of all these rules, my girlfriend was quite surprised after she discovered i had taken my wallet with me on a skiing trip with her parents into the taiga...
i know the rules: they seem not too weird: these days even dutch regulations, which we like to consider liberal, require an i.d. for every citizen in public.
i was never asked for my passport in russia (maybe i don't look too foreign as long as i keep my mouth shut, or maybe it's just that i never was in moscow ) and often wondered if taking my passport with me, with the (relatively small) risk of it being stolen, was a wise thing at all.. |
