Recently had the chance to rent a handful of Russian films I've been waiting to see for a while now. I know most of these titles were mentioned earlier in this thread a few months back, but I'm glad I've finally seen them . . . . Burnt by the Sun, Russian Ark, Prisoner of the Mountains, Brat (Brother), Dersu Uzala. They were all unique. Dersu Uzala was probably my favourite, the characters were almost constantly being assaulted by the harsh elements of the environment, while struggling through a surveying expedition across Siberia. It had some unforgettable scenes. The scene out in the Tundra was excruciating to watch, but it's brilliant.

Has anyone seen The Return yet? Any critiques? This movie is available in most stores currently. It's a recent release.

Strange Question, can you buy Russian movies with English Subtitles in Russia. If so, where?

As long as you buy a licensed DVD in places like "Soyuz", you can have any subtitles you want Smile

Have you seen many movies by Fellini, Hitchcock, Kieslowski, Scorsese, Welles, Kurosawa, Renoir or Keaton?

Once a famous American film critic was interviewing a famous director and made the mistake of asking what his favorite film was.He rattled off a list of over 200. Smile
My favorites movies are too many to name.

I recently saw Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears. It was OK but I was surprised it won best foreign film in 1982 for Academy Award. It just did not move me in that sense?

What do people think of Tartakovsky films? I am going to watch Andrei Rublev as my 1st Tartakovsky film. I am glad I finally found a video store with lots of foreign films. I also love French and Italion films. Life is Beautiful is such a great movie. I love that director. UI think his name is Bellini or something like that.

Rrrrobbberrrrrto Benini !

Camrade, maybe I didn't make myself clear? I uh, dissed "The Return". It is a very, very good movie (powerful, wonderful performances from all three actors, perfect ending) but it's not a great film, it's not one of the greatest I have seen and if you've seen "Solaris", "La Dolce Vita", "Citizen Kane" or "The Rules of the Game", then "The Return" is not one of the best you've ever seen either.By far.

I've just watched Slave of love (Раба любви ), which I've seen before. But this time around it made much bigger impression upon me. The film is set in a southern Russian town during civil war after revolution. The story revolves around prominent silent film actress, who slowly learns what really is going on around her.
The movie made me think of how so many people, like the heroine of the feature, do live in blissful world of ignorance. But what I really enjoyed is how director Nikita Mikhalkov kept the overtone of the film very lyrical almost all the way through, and in the end to the contrast of what was happening.
Have any of you seen any of his other works recently?
