We have heard that the easiest way to get from Helsinki to St. Petersburg is via an overnight passenger train. We would appreciate any information on this train, i.e., how to buy tickets, where to catch the train, security on it (we're three females traveling together), where it drops you off in St. Petersburg, if the drop-off point is a central location, etc. Thank you so much.

Tres Amigas,
The train goes to Finlandskii station, Northeast of the "centre" of St P. You may as well visit Lenin's train which is at this station, and the huge statue of him outside, which mimic's the famous photo of him addressing the crowds from the top of the train. You can see the gunship Aurora across the river. It is a fair hike to get to Nevskii Prospekt from this station. You can go via The Field of Mars and the Church on Spilled Blood, knocking over two things to see....If you have a Dorling Kingsbury (?) travel book, Russia Bliny (yummy pancakes) is addressed incorrectly in it. The street was renamed to Gagarinskaya Ulitsa.

Also, if you want to move on, there are overnight trains to Moscow leaving from Moskovskii station at the south end of Nev P. Generally departing around midnight. Cheap too, no problems getting a berth.

Thank you both, zeel and UsualSuspect, for all the helpful information you have given us.

We found the website very helpful. It would seem least expensive and most time-saving to sleep on overnight trains from both Helsinki to St. Petersburg and from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Do either of you have any suggestions on which class and type of tickets to purchase?

Also, I read someone's account of attempting to sleep on such a train and they complained that they couldn't sleep at all. Have either of you had that problem?

The directions and tips you included in your post, UsualSuspect, were so appreciated. We're going to type them right into the handbook we're making to take with us.

Thanks again to both of you. Smile
