When we were in Bryansk we ate at this very nice restuarnt and we were the only people there. I had this rolled beef dish stuffed with prunes and cheese with a mushroom sauce over it. It was the most awesome plate of food. It was served with a salad of greens, breads and some garlic potatoes. And of coarse a soup which I can't remember. I have since recreated this meal at home with much success. I also had a Ukrainian style potato dish for breakfast at our hotel in Bryansk that I really enjoyed and it was very inexpensive. It was a fired potato dish with onions and bacon like meat in it.

We ate a lot of meals with a Russian family in Moscow during our stay and everything they made was good.We had chicken, fish, rabbit, borscht etc.All kinds of stuff.A couple of them are coming to see us next month so I hope they like my cooking. I do cook a lot and I plan on looking for some Russian recipes on the net.The thing that will disappoint them the most I believe is American bread.It's junk.May have to pick up some decent bread at Panera or something. I don't bake and my wife just bakes sweets.

Here in the midwest US, you pretty much have to make kulich and sirnaya paskha yourself if you want them. Kulich is labor intensive. Every year I tell myself it's not worth it, but fortunately come to my senses and prepare it anyway. There are now a few Russian stores I could pick it up at the week preceding Paskha, but I think the recipe I use is superior, and it's much cheaper besides.

I hate mayo and sour cream, and am a vegetarian, which greatly limits me, but still, I never lacked good food. Baklazhanaya ikra is another good food. My mother-in-law also made a delicious walnut pate.
