I read that a male pensioner in Russia should be at least 60 years old. I have a friend in Russia that claims their father, who is a retired military officer receives a pension, but is only 53 years old. Is that right?

Militaries usually retire sooner, due to a riskier carrier. Here they retire at 45, but i dunno if it applies to Russia.

Yes, completely possible. Different ranks of officers have different retirement ages. Some are older than 60. 2 or 3 star generals can go up to 65, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, they can retire anytime after 45 or if they are laid-off (happened in the 90's when the army was downsized, most of them were over 40 though)
Also one interesting thing, 1 year in the far east counts as 1.5 years. My uncle who served near Vladivostok retired at the age of 47 having served for 25 ACTUAL years, but since 20 of them were in the far east, he 'really' served 35 years and they also count the 5 years in the academy so thats 40 years. Not bad. He also gets a pretty nice pension now because of that. Now the guy lives quietly with his wife in a small town north of Omsk on their nice pension and he spends his time either fishing or making wood-crafts (pretty nice ones) as a hobby.

Thanks for the info. The pension system is similar to the one for military in the USA.

Do you have the same 1 year = 1.5 year credit if you serve in 'remote places'? If so, what are some places that would fall under that category? |
