Advice please:- Is a train trip from Moscow to Beijing by way of Almaty and Urumqi possible? If so, what is the cost of the ticket (Ist/Soft class)? Can cities like Samarkand and Tashkent be visited on the way? Many thanks for your help folks and best wishes.

The best way would be to go to Novosibirsk, change to a train to Almaty, then go back to Novosibirsk again, and catch a train to Beijing from there. Alternatively, you can look for flights between Almaty and Beijing. See http://avia.waytorussia.net
