I wanted to apply for a Russian visa before I left the US but I am traveling for over three months before I enter Russia so I couldn't get one as it would have expired by then.

I'll be in Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Jordan and Egypt before flying to Russia. The longest I am in any one city is maybe 6 days (Jerusalem), 5 days in Istanbul and Cairo and 3 days for most other cities.

1. Is it possible to get a Russian visa just by walking up to an embassy in, say Rome, or Cairo or wherever, within a short time without paying so much more? I don't want to pay more than $100 for the visa itself and I just thought that, maybe since I'm walking in, I can get a visa in a couple of days.

I read on this board that someone got their visa in Prague in a couple of days cheaply, but I didn't know if this was standard throughout Europe or what.

2. Also, people have told me that getting visas in the Baltics or Finland takes only a couple of days and no invitation/voucher is required. They also said it is cheaper there than elsewhere. Is that true? This may be the best option but I will be nowhere near the Baltics or Finland!

Thanks.

If I drop off my passport to get a visa and it turns out to take say, 8 days or something, is it possible to travel outside of the capital on trains/buses and just come back and pick up visa and passport before I leave the country?

Anyone ever done this? I figure it varies from country to country. Does the embassy give you something while they hold your passport to show that you have a passport and are legally in the country?

I know conductors always want to stamp your passport and all that.

Hi tldrake,
in Germany prices for visas to Russia are graduated. You may get one within three hours for 155 Euro, the next day for 130, two to six days later for 90 Euros and so on. I guess it's pretty much the same all over the EU. Perhaps it's cheaper in Turkey, I'd try my luck in Istanbul. Sorry, can't tell you more than this.
