I read somewhere that it is only possible to buy train tickets 45 days in advance if you are going to be leaving from the original departure station, but that if you are going to join the train mid-route you can only purchase a ticket 3 days in advance. For example, you could purchase a ticket 45 days in advance for the #002 "Rossiya" if you are leaving from Moscow. However, if you were in Ekaterinburg and wanted to take the #002 "Rossiya" from Ekaterinburg to Irkutsk then in that case you can only buy the ticket no more than 3 days in advance.

Is that true? Or if that is only true of certain trains, how can one tell which tickets can (and can not) be purchased 45 days in advance?

It's correct that it's only possible to buy train tickets in Russia not longer than 45 days before departure.

If you are going to join a train mid-route there may be some limitations, especially at the railway station's ticket sales office. However, if you go through "advanced ticket sales" office at the station or an agency you will still be able to buy tickets 45 days before departure (however, prepare to pay more for your ticket).

In your example, being in Ekaterinburg, you could go to the "advanced ticket sales" offices ("predvaritelnaya prodazha biletov" - ??????????????? ??????? ???????) at the railway station itself or try a few agencies, I'm sure it's possible to buy tickets there.

Some trains don't offer such "advanced" sale, and mostly it is smaller local trains. If you're traveling with a long-distance train, such as #1 to #40, most probably it's possible to buy the tickets in advance without any problems.
