They are scamming because it is in people's nature to break the rules. Are we to conclude that because Dr Shipman killed so many patients all British GPs are killers? Are we to conclude that because Tim McVeigh went off the rails after the army all US army veterans are nuts?
As for "poker faces", it's not common to smile for no reason, it's a cultural thing, live with it or leave it alone. Are you going to bash Balinese for making donations to evil spirits every day? Or Muslims for praying 5 times a day? Or Americans for using cars so much?
People all over the world are different in their traditions but totally the same in their nature. If someone grew up in poverty, surrounded by scammers and thieves, learned how to scam from early age - it does not matter whether he grew up on a council estate in Manchester, in a ghetto on Detroit or in a flat block in Chelyabinsk, the result will be obvious. |

| To answer your question on why Russian's seem to be late often. You say you are an American, and you are always early to appointments. I just assume you have a car in the states OK. Most Russian's have to depend on public transportation, which is very good, but also very crowded. It is tough for them to judge the time needed to travel across the city sometimes. Maybe this would have something to do with them being late. If you asked them why, and they explain it's a cultural thing, maybe they just don't feel they need to explain themselves to you. By them saying to you it's a cultural thing, well, what could you come back with to an answer like that. It pretty much ends the questioning doesn't it? I've done a bit of business in Russia, and there has been many times I have experienced Russian's being late, but then so have I, on occasion, because of several reason's. One thing about living, going to school, working, etc in a foreign country, you can't expect them to step up, or down, to your standards. Just one more thought, Newbharry's post are very similar to Winston's with bad spelling to maybe throw us off, but it is just an observation. |

um.. no im not winston.. i do need to work on my "internet" typing though. now.. im not american american. i said im asian. dude man i dun know what i am ok? i lived too many places. and i depend on public transportation too.. pfft.. hard to judge ? i live in a place where most ppl get their first car at age 30. Avg Japan get their car at 24+ hard to judge through city? tokyo not big enough to judge? thnx for tellin me about the cultural. no duh it's culture. i explained to you why "high suicide rate " through bushido is embedded in the Japanese culture . I can explain to you why mexican are late for their stuff more then just "culture as an answer. I can explain to you why Taiwanese are not polite compare to other places and i know how it became their culture. from your above post i learned nothing. im NOT expecting them to conform to me. im EXPECTING MYself to merge into da culture. i'd like to know WHY. i lived enough places that i dun need you to tell me to tell a culture of ppl to conform to me. but culture blahblahblah is not a good answer.
last your assumptions are lame. |

a) Russians being scammers, well that should be obvious to all by now - it's like talking about grass being green. what's the point of discussing it?

newbharry - you mention cultural clash between orientals and russians. This will be an interesting topic in 50 - 100 years, since Russians are dying. They are facing one of the most severe population implosions of any country today, whereas the neighbor country keeps growing. One day it will be 10 people trying to defend the largest pieces of property, especially from a few billion Chinese. Wow.

Russians ALL being scammers? Judging a nation by several people, are we? This is like saying all americans are ignorant and stuipid, all moslems are terrorists, all Italians are in the the mafia, all french are arrogant, all Columbians are drug dealers and so on. You see what I am trying to say?
Another thing, the decline in population is not much of a problem since the death rate has gone down in the last several years and the birth rate has risen (albeit it is only a small increase). Another factor is that there are more immigrants than emmigrants, and I am talking only about the LEGAL ones, if you want to include the several million ILLEGALS that enter Russia every year, the population would actually be increasing. So you should not worry about the population decline, it is not as steep as it was in the 1990's. Also, don't worry about the "several billion chineese", in the unlikely case of any invasion, "several" nuclear ballistic missiles will fix that problem. It is obvious to anyone that the Chineese will not dare attack Russia, they have a much better approach - they enter Russia legally and illegally. Dal'nevostochnii Avt. Okrug (Khabarovsky Kray, Vladivostok, Amurskaya oblast') now somewhat resembles the southern U.S. states that border Mexico...but instead of Mexicans its Chineese and Koreans.

Personally I think the level service depends on the business cultural of the community and (sorry) valuation of the other member on their responsibility towards the other. For instance, you will be never late for your boss , but your boss can be late with you. Business cultural also determines the pass of the community. For instance, business cities like New York, Moscow and Hong Kong are very fast, while cultural tourist cities are slower. Orlando was slower paced city than Moscow. Based on this theory that girl does not value as much as you think and believes you will come at her beck and call. You might have a point that some cultures might feel superior than others, thus feels they more worthy to wait. |
thnx for apologizing. i discovered the answer in a book. do u think russian ppl still have a mentality of communism even after 10 years of it's fall? |

I think it has something to do with the stupid city plans. I'm in a bad mood today because...
I tried to look for an obscure building no. 31v this morning. I could find 31 (without 'v') on the street. I asked around and nobody knows where '31v' was (although everybody--including me-- knew where 31 was). I walked around several wrong streets up and down and to no avail.
Eventually after 45 minutes of walking in the rain, I gave up and went home.
And I'm usually a punctual person till I cam to Moscow. It's just so hard to get around.
