1. stalin's achievements are astonishing:
*.) creation of an aviation industry in 3 years (The Tupelove-4:
cloning of the 4 B-29 bombers in exactly 3 years)
*.) the nuclear bomb, also in a few years (50 megaton explosion
via 3-stage H-bomb is the largest so far)
*.) removal of internal enemies via shipping all wheat to Moscow,
then shipping it back out to cooperating peoples - that is
an amazing military manuever
2. is he evil? or not? dunno. What is evil? The communists were having
a tough time fighting the criminal world, keeping the soviet union
together (Ukraine was briefly independent in 1917 - Simon Petlura),
etc. - Stalin was an effective solution. He sent millions of Russian
soldiers to certain deaths with no remorse. I don't have any fondness
to that guy. My mother (Cossak from the Caucuses) lost her father
due to starvation; because of Joseph Stalin, I have no grandparents.
3. his achievements are not so remarkable given the modus operandi:
"you will do this or die". It worked. I heard that a firing squad
was prepared if their first a-bomb failed to detonate. Death motivates
people to get things done. |

Ok, as previously posted in this post I remarked that I have no right talking about other peoples governments because I don't know all of the dynamics as to why they elected their leader, in other words what is important to the average person.
Here is why I voted for my beloved non-socialist President Bush.
1) He is not a socialist 
2) When he says something there is no doubt that the world believes he will do it, ie.... disarm & "prove it" like the UN said, but is too weak & filled with money grubbing snakes in the grass, to do anything about it, or I will come & kick your ass.
3) As to intelligence, I would rather have INTEGRITY than a "book-smart" loser who bases all of his "ideas" on theory rather than history. It's funny that few Russians have ever even heard about Ayn Rand. I wonder what her take would be on the Khodorkovsky saga.
Back to Stalin. Did he kill 40 million people? What if it was only 39? After all, he did build the country's nuclear defenses and Stalin buildings are much nicer looking than Khruschev's buildings. Is this a real argument? Questioning whether or not someone is evil is ridiculous; evil is a moral concept and morals are only relevant in the context of the society that creates them. Under Lenin and Stalin, communism was transformed from a relatively harmless collectivist ideology that had failed several times on the American fronteir into a totalitarian one. It was able to succeed because Russians are envious people who refuse to believe that a man is the master of his own destiny (something Ayn Rand might say.)
Whereas some hatch working at the rynok dreams of one day owning a small business, a Russian might dream of having a respectable, well-paying job that will take advangage of his mental faculties rather than his industriousness. Matthew Maly says that nowhere in Russian literature is entrepreneurship venerated. It is associated with outsiders like Jews (such as Ayn Rand, nee Alissa Rosenbaum.)
It was the ire of Ukrainians, Lithuanians and others that brought the shame of Stalin's era into the light. Before Robert Conquest's book, few Americans were aware of the artificial famine and well, ok, most Americans can't locate Lithuania on a map unless some missionaries made a point of telling them about their activities there after Sunday church service. (Sorry, I'm from the USA myself and it's the truth.) |

40 mil? get a life...if all this is supposed to be true why when Gorby opened the Moscow archives nothing of this had been prooven, I have read the archives myself before they clsoed them again and there were a maximum of 700,000 sent to forced labour and all were criminals....

LOL Do you really believe that? and i'm not even talking about the # yet. That all the people he sent to their deaths were actually "varog naroda" (enemy of the state)....people reported on each other like crazy..sometimes just to get an apartment...what about all the artists....you couldn't write anything that doesn't say Stalin is great, USSR is great every other line...if he remotely didn't like their work...he would send them to labour camps.

Marshal Tukhachevskii was a 'criminal'? Any evidence to support that claim? As a military man yourself you must be aware that the decimation of the Red Army officer corps that started in 1937 was directly responsible for the hopeless disorganisation that ensued in the face of Operation Barbarossa and that this in turn translated into massively inflated casualty figures. The men who died or were captured in the Minsk encirclement (to pick one small example) have Stalin to thank for their fate. It is impossible to imagine that a man like Tukhachevskii (had he still been in his post) would have displayed the appalling stupidity and naievety of Stalin.

Well during the WWII, American killed probably more french than the Germans did with blind and massive bombings. But I can understand US pilots didn't get too much risk, the life of an american soldier worth thousands of civilians, isn't it ?.

Well, it seems that the last war won by the French was the WWI according to history books (may be it is not the case with American ones ?)

It seems you didn't see the facts, Chirac cleary said that the French Army was not occupation army and if Ivory coast President ask the french Army to leave it would be done. By the way Laurent Gbagbo didn't, he knew without the french army his country would have felt down into anarchy.
Note : there is nothing to get from this country (no oil at least), only troubles.
Well, you know every country fight for itself, France during the WWII was only a battle field for US headquarters but I guess European western countries has to thank USA but certainly not bowing down.

| One more thing, when the french army came to Ivory coast to protect french citizens there were not only french civilians, a lot of people from many countries has been protected by the french army including a lot of Americans. |

ur a funny guy who talks alot. u come in here tellin us not to judge moral blahblahblah in your first post. then i read... ur in the war with us. man.. typical american hypocrite. French won the WWI. very funny. if that's so. germany wouldn't have pushed in in da first place if french is so great. we're not talkin about france but stalin here. communism is not an old idea.. and it's not like ppl are brain washed. capitalism is just as evil and it will fail one day . it contradicts itself. Capitalism requires competitions, and yet monopoly can be achieved, then if there's monopoly how can there be competitions? pfft. screw USA and bush. |
