I live in London England now but I grew up in Canada. I've been to Russia 3 times now, to Ekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, and towns in the south Urals (Zlatoust, Satka, Mezhevoy). Also to Zyuratkul national park. Oh, and on my 3rd trip I spent 4 days in Moscow since I was getting tired of explaining how I had never seen anything in Moscow even though I had spent weeks in Russia.
For my next trip I'm thinking of the Mari-El republic or perhaps Volgograd (Stalingrad). |

What area of London do you live in? I also spent a year and a half in the UK and Dublin, Ireland many years ago. Been living in Mesa, Arizona for 12 years now and grew up in Chicago and Milwaukee. Making plans to travel to Russia and maybe eastern Europe this year.

| Wavetossed,You are an interesting guy. What brought you btw to visit Russia 3X? and since I am nosy, why do you choose to live in England? Not that England is the land of evil or anything, but it certainly would not be my place to settle down! I'd rather go home to Canada!!! |

That is just right across the water from me. I'll be sure to stowaway on the next cargo ship heading for Vladivostok just to do that!

WTF? Ok Manhattan less Harlem and about 25% of Brooklyn (Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Park Slope, Greenpoint, Boerum Hill, parts of Williamsburg) are ok. The rest is just ass, and an unholy mixture of socialist rent control legislation and city housing projects keep the city as dirty as it is expensive. And here we're not talking seedy-dirty, the Giuliani-Bloomberg gestapo made sure that there aren't any hookers or good clubs where you can do ecstasy anymore. We're talking full-of-homeless-people that piss everywhere dirty. New York is a dystopia where you work as hard as you can to make enough money to live 50 meters from welfare recipients.
I live near the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. |

I agree about NYC. I ventured into Harlem with a friend. I was very amused with the McDonalds there...same as in any place but with a "secured" counter where the cash registers are. We also had some "homies" have a "chat" with us about why "us white boys" are in their "hood". After they found out that we were Russian, they were "cool wit it". Interesting anyways though.
To the people that live inside the Garden Ring in Moscow:
Is it any good? I live pretty close to the center (Dynamo) but there are still parks here and it is a pretty good neighbourhood. In the center do you experience any problems with the lack of "produkti" stores? (grocery)

I was born in Leningrad (now St Petersburg), Russia
I live in New York City, USA
I somewhat disagree with the 2 previous comments about New York. First of all, the city has gooten better over the last 5-6 years. Secondly, there are very nice and clean areas in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. For example, Bay Ridge in Brooklyn is nice. And Forest Hills in Queens is cute. Someone mentioned Cobble Hill - there are some really nice and inexpensive restaurants there. Not to mention Manhattan - certainly feels like the capital of the world... I love Manhattan. |

| Ilove Manhattan too. It is just so diverse and alive. And contrary to what people say, New Yorkers are not all cold and uncaring. For example just yesterday I met a very nice African American Photo Journalist who works for Associated Press WHO WENT OUT OF HIS WAY TO COME AND SPEAK WITH aLEX AND mYSELF OUTSIDE OF SOME TEXTILE MUSEUM. I also met people walking their dogs and vendors on our walk and in the restaurant a man approached me to ask me very nicely information about my wheelchair. People were very nice all around, except for drivers and that is only because it is very stressful to drive in and out of the city. But I do love Manhattan! |

Yep you're a New Yorker all right: you think the city is the center of the known universe. Parisians, Muscovites, and people here in SF and LA feel the same way
I like London & Paris better than New York. Its much more diverse and a lot less segregated. |

...at least at this moment.
OK, you are about the third person on this forum to say London and Paris is more diverse than New York.I've been to both places and it didn't seem that way.Does anyone here have a 2005 world almanac?!And can look up the minority populations of all three cities? We gotta settle this once and for all.
I disagree about segregated. In Queens I was one of the only white kids on my block . |

There's something to be said for that. A former mayor of NYC once called the capital of the world, and not without reason - as the seat of the UN and the NY Stock Exchange, it certainly has more influence on world affairs than any other city in the world today. |
